Victims first. Evidence second. Offender third.

Fox Hollow Farm

Herbert Richard Baumeister became the central suspect in the disappearances of multiple men from the Indianapolis area during the 1990s.

Investigators later recovered extensive human remains from his property, Fox Hollow Farm, in Hamilton County, Indiana.

The I-70 Connection

Baumeister was also investigated for possible links to the so-called I-70 Strangler cases involving men found murdered near interstate corridors.

No Criminal Trial

Baumeister fled to Canada and died by suicide in 1996 before he could be arrested and tried for the Fox Hollow killings.

Identification Continues

Modern forensic and genetic-genealogy work has continued to identify remains recovered from the property decades after the original investigation.

Why This Case Matters

The case demonstrates the difference between a strong investigative attribution and a courtroom conviction: Baumeister died before trial, so the evidence must be described with that limitation intact.

Identified Fox Hollow Victims

As forensic identification has continued, the publicly identified men connected to remains recovered at Fox Hollow Farm include:

  • John Lee “Johnny” Bayer
  • Jeffrey Allen Jones
  • Richard Douglas Hamilton Jr.
  • Allen Lee Livingston
  • Daniel Thomas Halloran
  • Steven Spurlin Hale
  • Allen Wayne Broussard
  • Roger Allen Goodlet
  • Michael Frederick Keirn
  • Manuel Resendez

Thousands of bone fragments remain under review. Baumeister is also suspected in earlier highway-associated murders, but those cases must remain labeled investigative attributions rather than convictions.

Investigation Highlights

  • A human skull discovered on the family property years earlier became critical after later disappearances were linked to Baumeister.
  • Survivor Tony Harris provided investigators with information about a frightening encounter involving Baumeister.
  • Baumeister resisted searches until family circumstances changed and investigators gained access to Fox Hollow Farm.
  • Recovery of thousands of bone fragments created an identification effort that continues decades later through DNA and genetic genealogy.

Psychiatric and Psychological Record

Baumeister died by suicide before arrest or trial, so there was no completed forensic psychiatric evaluation in an adversarial court process. Retrospective labels should therefore be avoided.

Modus Operandi vs. Signature

Suspected modus operandi: Contact with men in Indianapolis gay-bar settings, bringing victims to a private residence, strangulation, and concealment on rural property.

Signature: Because Baumeister was never tried and several attributed cases remain unproven, claims of a unique signature should be made cautiously. Ligature strangulation and concealment are strong linkage features but are not by themselves proof of authorship.
