The original crime: Cody Birchfield’s disappearance and murder

Cody Birchfield and Morley were co-workers. According to the BBC’s review of a victim-impact statement, their friendship developed while Birchfield was training Morley at a pallet manufacturing company. Birchfield’s sister, Carrie Norman, separately told WKRN that Morley had offered her brother rides to and from work because Birchfield did not have a vehicle. Birchfield was reported missing from Elizabethton in February 2022. Contemporaneous trial coverage said his family identified February 21 as the last time he had been seen with Morley. Investigators obtained search warrants for Morley’s home and vehicle. On March 2, an attempted stop led to a pursuit toward North Carolina and Morley’s arrest. A search of his home uncovered Birchfield’s body. February 2025 trial report

The BBC reported that court records described a metal box beneath Morley’s home containing Birchfield’s body. A pathology report cited in court identified a gunshot wound to the back of the head as the cause of death. The BBC also reported that cartridge casings matched a gun found at Morley’s home. These details are attributed to the BBC’s review of records; Jaded Evidence has not independently examined the underlying pathology and firearms reports. BBC account of the court evidence

WJHL reported sentencing on June 27, 2025: life with parole eligibility, plus additional terms for related offenses. Sentencing report

Parole eligibility is not a promise of release. The reviewed reporting does not justify describing this as life without parole. The signed sentencing judgments and current correctional calculation would be needed to independently verify how all additional terms interact and any eligibility date.

Questions about the escape response

Tiptonville Police Chief Joe England told Fox News that his department was notified about a potentially missing inmate at 4:40 a.m. Monday, more than five hours after the 11:30 p.m. missing-inmate confirmation. He said Lake County Central Dispatch received formal escape notification at 6:20 a.m. This is the chief’s reported account of notifications; it does not establish Morley’s exact escape time or a completed finding about responsibility. WSMV reported that Birchfield’s longtime friend Diana Reid said she and his family did not receive a VINE alert and learned about the escape on Facebook. That is an attributed account, rather than an independently verified audit of the notification system. WSMV victim-notification report
