Sonia Exelby: The Dwain Hall Investigation
Portsmouth, England → Marion County, Florida · October 2025
Current legal status: Dwain Hall has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and kidnapping. Jury selection is scheduled for November 16, 2026, in Marion County. Court TV’s October 16 update lists a November 3 pretrial hearing. No verdict has been reported.
Sonia Exelby was 32 when she travelled from England to Florida and was later found buried in woodland. The prosecution concerns her death, the circumstances of her confinement and Hall’s alleged conduct. Her family says she was vulnerable and groomed online; investigators describe digital and physical evidence connecting Hall to her disappearance and death.
Presumption of innocence: Hall denies the charges. Allegations, family accounts, police interpretations and court findings are identified separately below.
02 | Sonia’s life and family

Sonia was from Southsea in Portsmouth and the youngest of six siblings. In the family tribute released by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, relatives remembered her piano playing, singing, kindness and acceptance of others. She taught music to her nieces and nephews and shared her life with her partner Stevie for 15 years.
Her family described her as compassionate and gentle, including her decision to become vegan because she cared about animals. They emphasized that her life should be remembered for more than the mental-health difficulties she experienced.

Investigators say attempted debit-card charges led them to Hall’s roadside-assistance business. They describe a recovered phone video showing Sonia injured and hesitant, and messages expressing fear and regret. The timing, completeness and context of the material will matter when assessing what it proves.

Police say a shovel recovered from Hall’s home bore biological material linked to Sonia. Investigators also retrieved a mailed package from an Ohio acquaintance containing a knife they associated with her death. These are reported investigative findings; the underlying laboratory reports and chain-of-custody records are distinct evidence.

06 | Prosecution, defense and family accounts
Prosecution / investigators: The state alleges kidnapping and murder. Investigators say the recovered recordings, biological evidence, financial activity and location history contradict Hall’s explanations.
Hall’s reported account: He initially denied knowing Sonia, later acknowledged contact and described sexual activity as consensual. Court TV also reported his claim that she left with another man. These are statements attributed to Hall in investigative reporting, not a substitute for defense arguments at trial.
Family: Relatives allege that men online groomed Sonia over two years. They say she had expressed a desire to expose people she believed were targeting vulnerable women. These concerns are attributed family claims; they do not establish a wider criminal network.
Central distinction: Earlier messages attributed to Sonia and later evidence about fear or restraint must be examined in context. An account of why she travelled does not, by itself, answer what Hall did or establish the circumstances of her death.
07 | Courtroom developments
Hall has entered not-guilty pleas. FOX 35 reported that a judge denied bond following the homicide arrest. The April 22, 2026 hearing addressed trial scheduling; Court TV reported that defense counsel did not then plan a motion concerning Hall’s recorded police statements.
The next reported pretrial hearing is November 3. The present case file separates completed hearings from scheduled proceedings.
08 | Verdicts, sentencing and appeals
As of October 23, 2026, no trial verdict or sentence is reported. The case is in pretrial proceedings. Hall remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
09 | Unresolved questions
- What does the complete digital record show? Full exchanges and recording context matter beyond excerpts.
- How does the state establish restraint, intent and the sequence of events? Those propositions must be assessed against admitted evidence and the court’s instructions.
- What forensic conclusions will experts present? The laboratory findings, their limits and chain of custody should be examined at trial.
- What will the defense contest? The detailed trial position must be distinguished from Hall’s earlier police statements.
- What evidence supports the family’s grooming concerns? Those allegations require evidence separate from assumptions about online communities.
