JADED EVIDENCE • OCTOBER 16, 2026 COURT UPDATE
Alex Murdaugh retrial — DNA testing ruling
At a pretrial hearing, Judge Debra McCaslin permitted the defense to independently test unidentified male DNA reportedly recovered from Maggie Murdaugh’s fingernails and phone, but declined a broad review of ballistics from unrelated shootings. Unidentified DNA does not establish that another individual committed either murder.

The defense considers further testing potentially relevant; prosecutors raised objections including sample limitations. Permission to test is a procedural ruling, not a finding about the DNA’s significance. The court separately rejected the broader ballistics request.

The primary opinion explains the jury-influence ruling and guidance on financial-crime evidence. Its holding controls over shorthand descriptions of the reversal.
View More — Forensic testing and discovery
Current pretrial disputes concern DNA retesting and other records. A request for testing does not establish a new forensic result.
View More — Retrial admissibility
Evidence admitted in the first trial is not automatically treated as admitted at the retrial; current orders and the appellate guidance matter.

06 | Prosecution and defense
View More — Prosecution position
The State intends to retry the murder allegations. The appeal did not result in an acquittal. Evidence about motive, digital records and the shootings remains subject to the retrial court’s rulings.
View More — Defense position
Murdaugh denies killing his wife and son. The successful new-trial claim concerned improper external influence on the jury; additional defense requests address forensic testing and discovery. A new-trial ruling does not decide the factual defense.

FITSNews reports that Murdaugh’s attorneys confirmed receipt of the raw three-dimensional crime-scene scan data on October 21. This case file was reconciled with Jaded Evidence’s master trial records and the public sources listed above. The source descriptions preserve the difference between a primary court document, an official party announcement and reporting. A prosecution release states the prosecution’s account; it is not a substitute for a verdict.
