Downtown Portland Human Remains Investigation
What authorities have confirmed—and what has not been classified—in Portland Police Bureau case 26-298767.
Official account
At approximately 9:15 a.m. on October 13, 2026, Portland Police Bureau officers responded after a crew contracted to clean homeless encampments reported finding what appeared to be human remains. The medical examiner later confirmed that the discovery was human.
The Police Bureau’s release describes the area as “Southeast Harvey Milk Street and Southwest Naito Parkway.” That directional wording is reproduced because it is how the official notice identifies the location; this page does not silently correct or reinterpret the agency’s record.
Investigative status
PPB’s Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation. The agency assigned case number 26-298767 and said additional information would be released when appropriate.
Identification and current classification
On October 26, the Portland Police Bureau reported that the State Medical Examiner had identified both sets of remains as belonging to the same 38-year-old man. His family has been notified, and authorities are withholding his name. The initial examination found no specific abnormalities or injuries; toxicology remains pending. Detectives continue investigating how the remains became separated.
No homicide classification has been announced. The absence of specific injuries in the initial examination does not resolve the cause or manner of death, and the circumstances surrounding the separation of the remains remain under investigation. PPB’s update asks tipsters to reference case 26-304859; the original discovery release used case 26-298767.
