Sandra Birchmore / Matthew Farwell — Federal Trial Underway
Jury selection began October 6 in Boston. Federal prosecutors allege former Stoughton police officer Matthew Farwell strangled 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore and staged her 2021 death as suicide after years of alleged sexual exploitation beginning when she was a teenager in a police youth program. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. Sixteen jurors, including four alternates, are expected; voir dire is scheduled for October 8 and opening statements could begin October 9. The central forensic dispute is homicide by strangulation versus suicidal hanging.

Hillary Hellewell / William Morton — 1985 Cold Case
Rhode Island authorities announced that William Morton, 61, was arraigned October 6 on one murder charge in the 1985 death of 22-year-old Hillary Hellewell. The charge follows a renewed cold-case investigation. Jaded Evidence is seeking the charging documents before characterizing what evidentiary development produced the 2026 prosecution.
Damari Carter — Two Murder Convictions
A Philadelphia jury convicted Dominique Bailey and Kevin Spencer of third-degree murder and related offenses in the 2023 death of four-year-old Damari Carter. The Philadelphia District Attorney says the convictions also include conspiracy to commit murder, endangering the welfare of a child, false reports, evidence tampering and abuse of a corpse. Sentencing and any post-trial litigation remain to be tracked.

Pueblo County Child-Death Case — Samantha Kimberly Convicted
Samantha Kimberly was convicted of first-degree murder, two child-abuse counts and accessory to a crime in the death of her three-year-old son. Sentencing is scheduled for October 26. The conviction applies to Kimberly; the procedural posture of any co-defendant must be tracked separately.
Arcadia Surrogate-Born Children — Abuse Prosecution
Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged Guojun Xuan and Silvia Zhang in an alleged child-abuse and conspiracy case involving children born through surrogacy. Both have pleaded not guilty. The case is notable for the number of children involved, surveillance evidence described by prosecutors, and questions about institutional and child-protection oversight. All allegations remain unproved.
